And it is clear that here we have a singer who can write for voices so that they can develop freely (the roles were also written for specific singers) and can express themselves in singable phrases which clearly convey the text all the time. The music is inventive, surprising, and concentratedly expressive, neither ingratiating not overly sophisticated.”
